- The Omaha World-Herald as “exceptionally strong…sensible and practical.” (You can Read about Lorraine in the Omaha World-Herald.)
- Richard Holland, Chairman of Building Bright Futures: “Ms. Chang would be a marvelous choice. Her experience and good sense would serve us well.”
The Learning Community is a brand new concept that was created by the Nebraska State Legislature in 2006. Its purpose is to create more opportunities for student success through strategic collaboration among the 11 school districts in Douglas and Sarpy Counties. The Learning Community Coordinating Council will have 18 voting members, of which 12 will be elected in November, 2008, and 6 will be appointed school board members. There are six new Learning Community districts, each with approximately 90,000 residents. I am running in District 3, which includes all of the Westside Community Schools, all of the Ralston School District, and part of the Omaha Public Schools. See the Learning Community map.
I believe that the new Learning Community presents an unprecedented opportunity to build on the strengths of the individual school districts and to create new pathways of success for all students, wherever they may reside. I want our community to have a vibrant public school system that:
- Maintains a consistent focus on student success;
- Creates new learning opportunities through innovative programs; and
- Uses available resources wisely to achieve improved results for all children.
Together we can help kids succeed.
I am running for the Learning Community Coordinating Council because I am passionate about the importance of education. Education is important for individual students, for whom a quality education can be the key to opening doors of opportunity in life. It is also important for our community as a whole because a vibrant public education system is essential for economic vitality and growth.
I am excited about the opportunity to make a positive difference for kids in this community. I have devoted most of my career to public service and leading change. I bring almost thirty years of professional experience in bringing people together around a common purpose and set of guiding principles. I have been an active parent volunteer in both the Omaha and Westside school districts, and I have a long history and commitment to leadership and service.
I would appreciate your vote on November 4th!
Lorraine
